Blog: The Life Of A Supreme Ruler
And it’s Friday, again.

Time flies.
TTD!
Hmm, been playing a bit of TTD today – haven’t actually sat down and had a game of it in ages. It’s quite fun. 🙂 Playing with the DB Set XL 0.81, also quite fun – haven’t played with the DB Set since it was, well, the original DB Set – all sorts of new things in XL 0.81. As well, there are a number of new things in TTDPatch, such as path-based signalling, bus stops (as opposed to bus stations), higher resolutions, and more, so it’s rather enjoyable. 🙂
Weather’s been quite bad here today, very windy… it was quite nice the past few days, don’t really know what’s happened. Oh well…
Time ticks on…
… and it’s getting to that part of the holidays when they’re nearly over – just tomorrow, Friday, Saturday and Sunday-until-5pm now. *sigh* Then it’s 4-5 weeks until exams, and then, well, we’ll see.
Turck MMCache!
I installed Turck MMCache on Zernebok today – basically, it compiles PHP code and stores that compiled version in memory, saving CPU time next time someone asks for the script. So far, it seems to be working quite nicely, and hopefully will help keep load on Zernebok down a bit more.
I managed to get around to doing some work on the new Repository today (which, incidentally, won’t look anything like the old one I’ve just linked to). Should be good when it’s done, anyway. 😉
Linux from scratch!
A more nerdy post today… I’ve been playing around with Linux From Scratch over the past day or so – basically, building a Linux system from, well, scratch. I started doing this in Virtual PC first of all, which was a bit of a mistake because it took ages. LFS measures things in “SBU” (Static Build Unit), based upon how long it takes to compile binutils, the first main package to be built. Under Virtual PC, it took 86 minutes and 40.981 seconds to build binutils, and some 227 minutes 35.555 seconds to build glibc. When I dug out an old hard disk and installed LFS on my real hardware, binutils took 5 minutes 22.347 seconds, and glibs 31 minutes 45.561 seconds. I now have a complete temporary build environment, tomorrow I’ll tackle the final thing, and maybe even get into “Beyond Linux From Scratch”, although I’ll need to download the packages for that one, which may take some time.
Well, I’m tired, so I’ll night for now.
Saturday
And it’s Saturday, and I hear the Pope has just died. Hmm, oh well, it had to happen some day, really.
Back on Sanday, and I had lifeguarding today, which seemed to drag on for a long time, somewhat longer than usual, and very hot. It’s actually been a very nice day here, rather summer-like. Apart from that, I’ve not been doing that much, quite bored really.
April Fools!
Well, today is April Fools Day, and here’s a roundup of a few April Fools that I’ve noticed:
- The Transport Tycoon Forums: a variety of words mysteriously changed… “the” to “teh”, “with” to “whit”, “TTDPatch” to “OpenTTD”, and others… most people found it quite funny, some found it annoying, some both. 😉
- Also on tt-forums… Darkvater announces that he’s abandoning OpenTTD for Windows – some think this is possibly true, who knows? Guess we’ll see…
- TTDPatch: small easter egg in TTDPatch 2.0.1 alpha 48
- GMail are increasing account sizes to 2GB, maybe more.. mine’s currently at 1561MB (you can see them grow!)
- Age of Empires III Heaven put a video up claiming to be footage from a recent show about the game… I admit this one had me, until I started reading the forum, thought, “hmm, hang on a minute!”, played the bit of video that had already downloaded and discovered it was Magical Trevor!
- Wikipedia have apparently been bought by Encyclopaedia Brittanica… the user-edited page describing the event soon descended into quite estoric madness however!
- The Register reports that Steve Jobs has joined IKEA
That’s a few, anyway… see if you can find any more while you still can. 😉
1GB RAM!
Yay, my new RAM arrived today, so I’m now happily brumming along with a gigabyte of RAM. 🙂 It’s quite nice, and it makes Firefox a lot snappier. Other than that, not got much to say at the moment. Our house is in the paper now, so we’ll see if anything happens there.
Driving again!
Well, today was my second driving lesson, basically doing the same as last week, plus some more stopping and starting – again, it seemed to go OK, I was a bit smoother on the clutch this week, which was good. Not going into town next week for a lesson (that getting up at 7.30am to catch the boat was pretty horrible), but I’ll be back at school on the 11th April so I’ve got one booked for then.
Hmm, what else? Well, not that much, really. It’s April on Friday, I think I’ll have a bit of fun on tt-forums then… 😉
Another day, another $3.42
Hmm, and it’s Tuesday night. Hard to keep track of days in the holidays, one day often just seems like the next. Well, anyway, tomorrow I’m going into town for a driving lesson, got various other little things to go and get too. Hopefully my memory should arrive tomorrow (according to the Royal Mail tracking site, anyway – whether it will or not, who knows), so I should be sailing along with 1GB tomorrow night. 🙂
Heard reports back from various people at the Easter Study School: Tom, Kirsty, Abigail, Clazz, and they seem to be surviving… well, I’d best go, got to get up early tomorrow to catch this boat!
Peace and quiet!
Well, Tom’s in town now for the Easter Study School so I’ll have some peace and quiet for the next few days – until Friday, in fact. I’m not going this year since they don’t offer courses for Advanced Highers, so in some ways, it’s hardly worth coming in for just two subjects.
Our house is now on the market, if anyone wants to buy it, offers over £105,000 please… it’s on Lows Orkney somewhere. My days here are numbered… we’ll be leaving sometime after the 5th June. 4½ weeks of school left, then exams, and then that’s it!
Night all.
Holidays!
Yes, it’s the Easter holidays at last! And already they’ve been quite productive, TTDAlter 4.3 is nearly ready for release, just need to get the translations back, work on the plug-in API and do some general tidying up… other than that, just been doing the usual sort of stuff.
Rich has posted some interesting photos of his new case, it looks quite good. I’ve just ordered another 512MB of memory for my computer at the rather cheap price of around £36, which will bring me to a total of a gigabyte. 🙂
OK, gotta go now, phone line is wanted… that’s the downside to being home, 56K!
Two periods to go…
Only two proper classes left now until the holidays (my Friday timetable consists of free period, free period, Biology, English, free period and Guidance)… been needing this holiday, it’s been a long term! Today wasn’t too bad a day, prepared for an essay when we come back in History, read some more of the Hogg novel in English and went over a Textual Analysis paper. Was doing some more stuff on (hmm, *consults Abigail’s blog*) physiological homeostasis in Biology. As she says, it’s a relatively complicated name for a relatively simple thing. And then we read some “Petit Nicolas” stories in French, as only half the class is actually here this week. Did I tell you that my French oral went OK? Well, it did, anyway.
Ken has updated his site with some new stuff again, including some interesting safety notices… check ’em out.
Right, that’s me for the day. Ta ta.
Not long now…
… until the Easter Holidays! More specifically, two days. 🙂
I saw “The Aviator” on Monday night, a very good film indeed. I’d write a longer review, but I can’t really be bothered at the moment. I’m likely going to see “Ladder 49” tomorrow night, looks good from the trailers. Some of us are maybe going to watch some of the “Naked Gun” films on DVD tonight back-to-back, so we’ll see how things go. Also got some homework to do, so’d best do that too!
TTFN.
Tuesday, Tuesday…
… and I am incredibly tired. Unusually so, in fact… didn’t do that much of interest today. My friend Jono has just arrived, and says “boo.” Exciting stuff, eh? Did I mention he has a web site?
Yes, well, I’d best go… very tired and all that. Yes.
Driving!
Had my first driving lesson today… it was an interesting experience, quite fun really. We basically drove around the East Mainland on some quite nice long roads, and I managed not to kill anyone. 🙂 But I’m not quite perfect, funnily enough… got another lesson next Wednesday anyway, so that should be good.
Other than that, what have I done today? We did part 2 of an experiment involving mustard seeds and IAA in biology today, some random stuff on violent black movements in the USA in history, worked on Specialist Study in English (I need to cut parts out of mine to make it under 5,000 words, ideally closer to 4,500), and not a lot in French. So that’s that!
Ash nazg durbatulûk…
Hmm, do a Google search for “Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.” with quotes, and who’s the number 1 result? Likewise, search for it without quotes, and who’s the number 3 result? I’m quite proud of that really. 😉 I’m also the proud owner of the #1 spot for Zernebok (naturally)… as well as “Owen Rudge”, and “Transport Tycoon” too, at the moment. Yes, I’m slightly bored.
Well, I’m off for now, may report back in at the hostel tonight.
WordPress 1.5 upgrade complete
Well, the upgrade to WordPress 1.5 appears to have gone OK, I need to tweak something on the main owenrudge.net homepage, but apart from that, things appear to be OK. Any comments now have to be pre-approved the first time one is made: ie, if you make a comment, I have to approve that, but then all future comments are automatically approved (this may vary depending on your IP address, etc, I’m not sure). Other than that, see if you can spot anything new. (There isn’t that much new on the client-side at the moment with the options I have selected).
Have fun!
Bonjour, tout le monde!
Well, I had my French oral exam today, and it didn’t seem to go too badly… could have been worse, anyway. Won’t know for sure how I did until August when I get my final mark for AH French back, but oh well, it’s over now.
It’s the holidays in a week time! Should be fun, could do with a break after this very long term. After that, only 4-5 weeks of school left until exams and The End™!
Right, I’m off to upgrade WordPress to version 1.5. Wish me luck!
LugRadio season 2 episode 11
LugRadio seasion 2 episode 11 is out, if you’re interested in Linux and/or open source stuff in general, have a listen to it. Remember, that I was mentioned in episode 10! 😉
Well, today has been a reasonably not-too-bad day… it started off with me really not feeling all that great about it (I had a history essay period 1, which wasn’t great but it could have been worse), but particularly after period 4 where I did a practice French oral – and then again period 6 – it’s not so bad. I discovered I actually do know most of the sentences, moreso than I thought I did before. 🙂 Just need to work on the Un sac de billes stuff a bit more, and go over everything one last time… wish me luck for tomorrow!
