Linux from scratch!
A more nerdy post today… I’ve been playing around with Linux From Scratch over the past day or so – basically, building a Linux system from, well, scratch. I started doing this in Virtual PC first of all, which was a bit of a mistake because it took ages. LFS measures things in “SBU” (Static Build Unit), based upon how long it takes to compile binutils, the first main package to be built. Under Virtual PC, it took 86 minutes and 40.981 seconds to build binutils, and some 227 minutes 35.555 seconds to build glibc. When I dug out an old hard disk and installed LFS on my real hardware, binutils took 5 minutes 22.347 seconds, and glibs 31 minutes 45.561 seconds. I now have a complete temporary build environment, tomorrow I’ll tackle the final thing, and maybe even get into “Beyond Linux From Scratch”, although I’ll need to download the packages for that one, which may take some time.
Well, I’m tired, so I’ll night for now.
There was a ‘Life in the Day’ article in the Sunday Times about Peter Maxwell Davies who lives on Sanday – I’m sure you already knew that though!

Hm, I’d rather leave it to those with the know-how than risk doing it myself.
http://www.ubuntu.com all the way man. Ubuntu rocks..

Pfffff… I laugh at your SBUs!
I’m doing my LFS again atm, and I just finished Binutils:

Yes, well, I don’t have a seven-tregahertz AMD Athlon 256 processor with 20TB of RAM. 😉
