Headin’ north
Well, I should be heading north again today, at around 1.10pm, to arrive in Aberdeen sometime after 3pm, and then to get the NorthLink boat back up to Kirkwall at 5pm. So, that should be fun, eh?
Oh, owenrudge.net still hasn’t been reactivated, and the server admin hasn’t replied yet! Me is tres annoyed, as he’s losing a lot of e-mail like this!
Bleh!
For some unknown reason, owenrudge.net has been deactivated on the server control panel by the server admin. Will report back when I find out why!
(Note that, unless you’ve already visited and cached the DNS for the blog, you won’t actually be able to read this… :P)
Heriot-Watt University
Visited Heriot-Watt University today – it was also quite good, a very nice campus, but I’m not too sure if the Computer Science course is quite the right one for me. We’ll see, I guess. Right now though, I’m still hoping that St Andrews will be where I end up.
Ended up outside the new Scottish Parliament building today, rather by accident: it’s quite something. Anyway, I’m going out so I’ll be back later.
St Andrews University
Visited St Andrews university today, it was great. 🙂 Very nice place – nice town, nice people, good courses, everything. I like it very much, and at the moment it’s ranked #1 on my “university rank list”. Although, admittedly, I’ve not actually visited any others yet – that comes tomorrow and Friday, with Heriot-Watt and Napier respectively. But I don’t really think they’ll compare with St Andrews, to be honest.
My dedicated server was set up recently – I logged in and played with it briefly at an Internet café in Edinburgh yesterday. Forgot to do a blog though, so that’s the reason for yesterday being grey on the old calendar on the right.
The Google adverts are doing reasonably – some days are especially good, others are medium, but none are really poor. Any donations or whatever are still greatly appreciated though!
Anyway, best go, stuff to do. Ta ta for now!
Cool!

I’m sitting in the Orkney Library, and on the computer opposite me, someone is watching Fat Boy Jono and related animations, some of which I had a part in making (“DaveOwen Productions”)… there also happens to be an animation about me there, which they just discovered.
I am stronger than I ever though I could be

Well, the boat’s a bit later than I thought it was, so I’ve got more time at home today. I got a reply from Adiungo today explaining why the server has been down so much recently – apparently, tt-forums is just too resource-hungry for their VPS. (Hence the dedicated server I’m getting).
Ken might be interested to know that I named my IRC server Zernebok. I wonder where that name came from? 😉
Anyway, Windows is getting kranky on low resources so I’d best go…
You look so fine that I really wanna make you mine
Filed under: — orudge @ 10/10/2004 10:18 pm
Well, the new server has been ordered – will hopefully be set up in the next few days. As I’m going to Edinburgh next week, I might not be able to get much done with it, but we’ll see what happens.
Anyway, I’m off to play with an IRC server. Toodle pip!
Dedicated server
(I’m currently listening to Weird Al Yankovic‘s “Bob“, which is rather a strange song, so that’s why I couldn’t be bothered to stick lyrics in this blog title. Oh, it’s just changed to eBay now. Still.)
Me is thinking about getting a dedicated server for tt-forums and all my other web stuff. Would likely be in the region of ~2GHz Intel chip, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, 1.25TB/month bandwidth, etc, if I go with a host that was recommended to me recently. Will see how it goes.
It’s the October break now, so don’t have to go back to school for two and a half weeks now. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m going down to Edinburgh next week, so that should be fun.
Anyway, I’m kind of bored, so I’ll go and find something to do, in theory.
“You’re haunting me”

New game to play… guess the song the lyrics in the title of this, and future, blogs are from. Now playing… The Streets – It Was Supposed To Be So Easy, and no, that’s not what the lyrics are from. I should have just stayed in bed like I know how.
Well, the queue’s outrageous, the lady’s taking ages, and I’m kind of bored. Insufficient funds. Today I have achieved absolutely nowt.
Bleh, it’s hard to write a blog when you’re listening to The Streets. *presses pause* Anyway, what have I done today… written the rest of my UCAS Personal Statement, filled in a load of stuff on the UCAS forms, had the last day of term (holidays as of now for two and a half weeks!), and that’s about it.
As I would say to a certain somebody… “Boo!”. Ta ta for now.
Test, stories, university visits, and other stuff
Filed under: — orudge @ 07/10/2004 2:51 pm
Well, the History essay seemed to go OK today – managed to finish it within the time, but it hasn’t been marked yet and I won’t find out how I did until after the holidays, for tomorrow is the last day of term. 🙂 The biology test (well, practice test, or test test, if you prefer) could have been worse, but it could have been better. Will find out the results of that tomorrow.
I gave Ken a copy of my English story to read, and he suggested various improvements and alterations. I’ll be making some alterations to it tonight, to hand in tomorrow. At some point in the future, you’ll be able to read it online if you so desire. Fun, eh?
Got word back from Heriot-Watt, the visit is indeed booked for next Thursday. So I just need to hear confirmation back from St Andrews now – I sent off the booking form, but have heard nothing, unless word has gone back to home. Hmm, hopefully my train tickets will have arrived at home, too, or will arrive tomorrow/Saturday.
It’s Jean-Marie’s birthday today (he’s the French assistant at the school), and most of the Advanced Higher class are meeting up with him tonight for dinner and a drink, so that should be fun.
Well, that’s about all for now. Au revoir!
Funny stuff
I’ll soon be adding a new section to my site, entitled “Funny Stuff”. This will contain, well, funny stuff – mainly Flash files, plus a few movies, etc. Think of it as a visual version of MP3Violation, perhaps. Anyway, I must go and learn how to do biology, I have a test tomorrow. Oh, and I have a history end-of-unit test, too. Plus I must finish my English story. Bleh.
Wasting Microsoft’s money
Found this today – “How To Cost Microsoft Money”. Basically, if you refresh the order form for the Windows XP SP2 CD, they’ll send you another one. And another one. And if you press it again, another one. Apparently, anyway – check out the site if you’re interested. 😉
I’ve just booked my ferry and train down to Edinburgh and back again next week, so that’s OK. Going on the overnight ferry on Monday/Tuesday, then getting the train down to Edinburgh. I’ve then got the St. Andrews visit on Wednesday, Heriot-Watt on the Thursday, and Napier on the Friday, then it’s back up to Orkney on the Saturday. So that should be fun, anyway, and it’ll be something a bit different. 🙂
Hmm, got to make some minor adjustments to my Effigy money, but that should all be done for next week.
Anyway, Squires is wanting this computer, so I’d best go.
University visits
Well, been planning university visits today… next week I should be going to Edinburgh to check out Napier and Heriot-Watt, as well as St. Andrews. So, I’ll see how things go. 🙂
Lifeguard!
Yay, I am now officially allowed to lifeguard in any UK swimming pool, as I now have my NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguarding Qualification). Whee! 🙂
Back In Black
Well, the reason for today’s blog title is due to the song I’m currently listening to: AC/DC – Back In Black, of course. Anyway, I had some fun with that Winamp ActiveX control yesterday, and got quite a bit of it figured out (although to be honest it’s got a very easy API), and got three-quarters of the way to figuring out that equalizer stuff, I think.
So, today. Oh yes, must e-mail Steve re: accomodation… anything else? Can’t remember. Oh, it turns out the problem with my TV card on SP2 (which I didn’t even write about, anyway) was due to an incompatibility with a Nero DirectShow filter (I installed a new version of Nero when I installed SP2). So that’s working now. I’m thinking about getting a FreeView (digital terrestrial) box of some sort – a USB one would be ideal, for use on my laptop. Will see how things go.
Winamp as an ActiveX control
I discovered an interesting thing today when working on someone’s computer (the usual reinstall Windows job): a version of Winamp as an ActiveX control. Doing some research, it appears that this was created by AOL, who wanted a small media player to plug into their software a few years ago. However, they were sued by the company who originally wrote the MP3 decoder which Winamp used, as being incorporated into a piece of software as large as the AOL client wasn’t in the original license agreement or something. That’s the only info I’ve found out about this ActiveX control: I’ve found no word of it otherwise.
Anyway, I’m currently playing around with it in VB, and it’s working very nicely. 🙂 It tends to crash the VB development environment once I’ve used it, but if I build an EXE, it works fine there. Just trying to figure out the setEQ function now, and how I should pass the EQ data… maybe the Winamp SDK will help me. I’ll post a tutorial about this on my site soon.
Fun, eh? 🙂
Stuff
Well, as I said yesterday, things didn’t really work out between Clazz and I – I mean, things were OK, but it just wasn’t working, so we sort of decided to leave it. We’re still friends (she’s in my biology class so would be rather hard to avoid, anyway! ;)), but that’s all, really. So, for all you hot chicks out there who are, ehm, queuing up to be with me, here I am. 😀
Yeah.
Single again
Oh well, single again… things didn’t really work out, but never mind. More tomorrow.
October tomorrow
Hmm, as usual, time flies, and it’s October tomorrow! I saw The Village last night at the cinema (it’s nice having free cinema for a year :)) which was quite good – a bit unusual, and I wasn’t expecting the whole thing to be set when it was, but a fine film nevertheless.
Been working on my short story for English – it’s turning out to be quite a long short story, and will probably be at least 5,000 words long by the end of it. It may also be published on t’Internet (eg, on this site) in the future: keep an eye out for it. 🙂
Unfortunately, my Chemistry appeal didn’t go through, so I’m stuck with a D, which is kind of annoying as I got a C in the prelim. *sigh*
Well, that’s that for today, if I can think of anything else to say, I likely will.
“You’ve Got Mail!”
Bah, was just sitting here in biology, accessing SCHOLAR and also checking my e-mail… I decided to try openwebmail this time, instead of Horde. All goes well, until the stupid thing shouts “You’ve Got Mail!”, AOL-style, for all to hear (including the teacher). *sigh*
