Blog: The Life Of A Supreme Ruler
Welcome to 2007!

Well, it’s now 2007… let’s hope this year will bring good things. Happy new year, everyone.
Christmas Eve
Well, it’s Christmas Eve. Ho ho ho. Merry Christmas to all.
Christmas madness!
It’s nearly Christmas, where did the time go? The past few weeks have been suitably insane, as usual. Had my French oral exam in the last week, as well as my driving test – the former went well, the latter went extremely well until the very last minute, when I managed to mess up the gears (not a fail in itself) when approaching some traffic lights, but the lights went red when I got myself sorted out, and the examiner thought I was going to drive through them, so put his foot down. 🙁 Oh well, such is life. Had various other things such as the KK panto and the comedy, which went well, and now attempting to relax a bit more. Life is pretty good right now for various reasons, and I’m lookin forward to the New Year!
Foxamp 0.3.7 (for Firefox 2.0) released
I’ve finally released an update to Foxamp (which had been sitting on my hard disk for a couple of months, sorry!) which enables support for Firefox 2.0. It will work for all Firefox 2.0.x versions. Download it here.
December already!

Time really does fly… I could have sworn it was only September a month or two ago. As usual, things have been suitably mad here… it’s now a week and a day until the Christmas holidays. Next week is going to be a busy week for me – in fact, starting from Saturday it’ll be busy. Let’s see…
- Saturday: Ents Christmas dinner in the afternoon, then Caroline’s birthday party in the evening
- Sunday: Setting up for the KK panto from 10am (urgh), then the Christmas ball in the evening.
- Monday: The usual classes, tutorials, etc.
- Tuesday: French oral exam, plus more of the usual classes, etc. In the evening, panto (I’m sound engineering it)
- Wednesday: Comp sci practical, panto in the late afternoon/early evening, comedy in the later evening (sound again)
- Thursday: CS2001 tutorial, almost immediately followed by my driving test, followed by another tutorial! Rocksoc in the evening hopefully.
- Friday: Finishing off practical if I haven’t managed to do so by this time. Then… phew! Can relax and go to the bop!
- Saturday: Union staff Christmas party. Should be a good laugh!
So, as you can see, a busy week ahead of me… then it’s Christmas and all the excitement that will bring (not much, I guess I’ll get to play AoE 3: War Chiefs and some Transport Tycoon), then it’ll be New Year, and then exams! Scary beans. My exams are at least spaced out with at least a day between each. Then… it’s off to Canada, and the US. No wonder I never have any money.
owenrudge.net is 7 years old!
Seven years, wow. On the 28th November 1999, I launched “Owen’s Visual Basic Workshop”, on the domain www.orudge.freeuk.com. It expanded to feature things other than Visual Basic, and in 2000, it became owenrudge.co.uk. The site grew and grew, and in 2002, owenrudge.net was registered. The site didn’t actually “become” owenrudge.net until mid-2003, as I recall, though. Since then, bits of it have branched off, into the Transport Tycoon Station, The Transport Tycoon Forums and so on, but the core site is still here… seven years on. Happy birthday, owenrudge.net. 😉
New Zernebok site up!
At long last, the new Zernebok Hosting web site is up! The new site provides comprehensive details for all our packages, starting at just £20/year ($40/year)! If you or a friend is in need of web hosting of any sort, please take a look, or get in touch!
Boston photos up
I’m back from Boston now, and back into the generally madness that is uni. Things are still pretty busy. Anyway, I’ve found time to upload my Boston photos, so have a poke through them. Boston was great, a fantastic city and the weather was very nice for me too. Got up to all sorts, went to the MIT museum, Museum of Science, aquarium, walked the Freedom Trail, took a trip out to Salem, went to the JFK museum, saw a comedy show, and probably other things I haven’t listed here. A very nice city indeed. Back to the grindstone though, essay due tomorrow!
Hello from Boston!

I’m tired. And hungry.
Hectic!
Life is rather mad at the moment. Just managed to finish my practical on circular buffer queues (fun stuff, I tell you), and have two essays to write for the end of Reading Week (basically), plus a French piece to condense, and another one to research and write. All of that while I’m going to Boston from Saturday until Sunday… so I guess I’ll try to make best use of my 16 or so hours on planes, and whatever spare time I may have in Boston on a rainy day, or similar. Looking forward to my trip though, will be nice to get away from it all – well, to some degree! Anyway, been out since 8.30am and rather tired, it being 9pm now, so I’m heading home. 🙂
At long last, an update!
Well, after many months of neglect, I’ve updated my main site a little bit – specifically, I’ve updated the About Me page. Otherwise, I’ve just been generally busy with university and “real life”, as detailed in the blog. The main site will get updated randomly over time, though… honestly!
(Oh, and if you’re reading this on Facebook – or indeed, on Planet Tycoon – and it seems to make no sense, it’s because I import my “Notes” externally from my blog, and my web site’s news stories come from the blog. Yes, I’m a nerd.)
MacBook and Zernebok Radio!
I ordered myself a nice shiney new MacBook (white, 1.83GHz Core Duo, 1GB DDR2, 80GB HD), which arrived yesterday. It’s rather nice indeed. I’m currently using it to DJ for Zernebok Radio in fact – listen to the streams at the aformentioned link, or listen to the MP3 stream online here (some DJs only broadcast a Vorbis stream for bandwidth reasons, though). The resurrection of Zernebok Radio has been rather successful, hopefully it will carry on being so good!
Busy busy busy!
Well, it’s been a busy few weeks since I last spoke. Freshers week came and went, and I was active on the ents crew running everything for half of the week, and trying to relax for the other half! Then lectures started again and are now starting to get interesting (now that most of the administrative stuff is done with), and I have even more ents stuff to be getting on with soon. As a result, this blog has been neglected a bit, but ah well, that’s normal these days. 😉
Back in Albany
Well, yesterday I got all my stuff moved back to Albany (managed to fit it all into one car load, wow!), and today I moved myself back into Albany. The new house is alright – my mobile phone signal isn’t too great in my room, which isn’t fun, and the Ethernet switch we’re connected to is an old 10Mbps switch, not a 100Mbps one. 🙁 But apart from that, the house is alright, and I’m vaguely attempting to get my room in order. 😛 Went out last night and was surprised at just how packed the union was – although compared with what it’ll be like tonight, it was nothing. 😉
A whole year since I first set foot (properly) in St Andrews… time does fly.
Wow, that old trick actually works!
Yesterday, in a last-ditch attempt to save my hard disk, I put it in the freezer. It’s an old trick – you stick it in the freezer, the parts inside it contract, and then expand again, in theory loosening up whatever got stuck in the first place. I figured I’ve give it a shot. Took it out this afternoon, plugged it in while still cold… nothing, the disk was still clanking away and not reading correctly. Sigh, my disk is dead then, I thought. However, tonight, I thought I’d give it one more shot, now that the drive had heated back up to room temperature… and it worked! that old trick worked! The disk is still working happily now, which leaves me with a bit of a problem. I can’t send it back when it’s working nicely… I’m leaving it on tonight. “Hopefully” it’ll die again. I don’t trust the disk as it is, seeing as it blatantly could die at any minute. (I did read one story the other day of a guy who put his hard disk in the freezer. It continued to work then for over a year). If it still works after a week or so (using it for “safe” things like watching videos – no new data on there), I’ll buy another 300GB HD, RAID-1 the two of them, and hope it all continues to work. I am VERY glad to have my data back now, anyway… a better backup scheme is in order, I think! Whee! 😀
Not again!

A month ago (well, technically, two months ago – the day before I went to Brazil for a month), my Maxtor hard disk failed. I replaced it when I got back to Brazil with a nice shiney new one. Lovely, all is fine and happy… until today, when it goes and fails too. Great. The last month’s e-mails, logs, and a whole pile of other things (such as my nicely planned out timetable for next summer, quite a few hours work there!) gone. Probably permanently. Tomorrow, I shall try sticking it in the freezer and doing that old trick, and see if it lets me get any life out of it. If it does, I shall try rescuing some important stuff. If not, bleh. The hard disk is obviously still under warranty, since it’s only been in operation for a month, but it’s very annoying. I’m very tempted to get RAID-1 sorted for my computer when I put things back together, in addition to sorting out the cooling in my case for hard disks if possible. *sigh*
More plans…
I’m considering, if I can afford it, to go by train all the way to Beijing or Vladivostok next summer, on the Trans-Siberian railway. As the longest railway in the world, it would be quite a journey… quite a journey indeed. Been looking up various details on it just randomly this evening, and it doesn’t look too expensive, just a bit complicated to get it all sorted. Would be the journey of a lifetime though, I’m sure!
Ah, the many places I want to go in this world!
Rome photos are up
My photos from Rome are now up on the gallery – click here to view them. I need to rotate some of the zoo and Vatican photos, but otherwise they should all be fine enough.
And here’s my updated Visited Countries map…
Back from Rome

Just to say that I’m back from Rome now. Photos and a blog shall come soon. 🙂
Rome!
A brief blog from Rome! Got here on Wednesday after the fun of “sleeping” in Stansted airport, etc. Saw many sites on Thursday, went to a water park yesterday and out to some pubs in the evening. Went to the zoo today, and got a few things planned for the next few days. It’s hot!
