Blog: The Life Of A Supreme Ruler
And Sunday…
Well, this is fun. Almost as fun as that three-hour boat journey earlier, which actually got in late, so by the time I got to the hostel it was about suppertime. Must go and do some work now though, so bye bye.
Saturday
It appears to be Saturday, and I appear to be slightly tired, so this is going to be another one of those non-posts. But a fun one, I’m sure.
Or maybe not.
Laptop…
Have to be very careful with it, it’s being a right pain. Will stop typing now for that reason.
Thursday
Well, it’s Thursday today, again. I wonder how many Thursdays have passed since I started this blog? And what’s more, do I have anything new to say? Just got back from rollerskating, which was fun, but now I have a sore toe or two. Got some stuff to do for French and Biology, and English too come to think of it. And apart from that, nothing significant to speak of.
Weird Wednesday
Well, it was a bit of a weird Wednesday today… a couple of my classes were significantly smaller. But oh well, it wasn’t too bad.
Ken has fallen to the dark side and placed advertising on his site, although it’s of a rather more interesting nature than the adverts on most sites. It’s actually blocked on the school/hostel systems though, so I’ve not seen the banners myself (haven’t been bothered to expend extra effort on seeing them yetr). You might find them interesting though. ๐
Well, I’m not really feeling like writing much more today, so I won’t.
Smile!

Hmm, it was Claudia’s last day in school today, before she goes back to Germany on Thursday morning. ๐ She’s really been quite a good friend, it’s sad that she’s going. A few of us from her French class and other exchange students had a little get together tonight to say goodbye to her. Oh well, I’ll keep in touch with her by e-mail, I guess! ๐
Apart from that, not done a lot today, just the usual sort of stuff.
Monday night
Well, the History essay actually wasn’t that bad… the two hours, after I got going, didn’t seem to take that long, looking back at it, and I think I produced a reasonable end result. Will have to wait until I get it back to tell for sure, of course…
Hmm, I’m tired.
Sunday night
It’s Sunday night once again, and it’s school again tomorrow, featuring, among other things, a practice two-hour History extended essay. Oh, the joy.
I got an unconditional offer from Napier the other day, and an invitation to an interview at Heriot-Watt for either the 19th January (bit late now), sometime in February (right in the middle of prelim time) or the 2nd(?) of March, so it looks like it’ll be March. I’m not sure about St Andrews yet… hopefully they’ll get back to me quite soon.
Well, I’ll say ta ta for now… ta ta for now.
School
Well, I’m not entirely sure how my English went today, it didn’t seem brilliant, but it’s perhaps not too bad. I kind of ran out of time at the end and didn’t spend enough time on Poor Things, but we’ll see how things go. Rory and Ken managed to miss it today due to the barriers being closed, and so they were unable to get to school. Hmm.
Badminton tonight, should be fun, if I can be bothered to walk there in what is currently fairly horrible pouring rain. Apart from that, I’ll say ta ta for now.
Network problems
The delightful Orkney Schools has had more network problems, resulting in a lack of Internet access for a great deal of yesterday. Funnily enough, it just went down as I was about to click ‘start’ on one of my servers which was down (not Zernebok, but the old Adiungo one), and so that server was still down for some time. *sigh*
Got an English unit test on Alastair Gray’s “Lanark” and “Poor Things” tomorrow, which should be fun. I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to fill an hour and a half’s worth of essay on it, depends on the question really. Talking about English, the thirteen pages that comprise the first draft of my Specialist Study dissertation, “Mythology of the Explorer”, focusing on Touching the Void by Joe Simpson, Ice! by Tristan Jones and Captain Scott by Ranulph Fiennes, are apparently “excellent”, and it seems I don’t have that much work to do before the final draft – apart from shorting it by 250-750 words. At least I don’t really have to write any more… Got to write stuff for history though: got a practice extended essay to do on appeasement on Monday – two hours long – and then again the next week for the final thing!
Well, I’m off to tt-forums, see you later.
Zernebok
*sigh*… this is getting a bit annoying, Zernebok is still having fluctuations in load averages, which can occasionally render the server slightly unusable. Things seem to be getting back to normal after the last ‘burst’ just now, but I’d prefer it if there weren’t any at all. Hmm.
Got some Young Enterprise masterclass thing tonight, which might or might not be fun. It’s also meant to be snowy and horrible tonight – hopefully it’ll stay like that until tomorrow. ๐ All this time off school is probably not good for me, but it’s more fun that way.
Until next time…
“The Annoying Thing”
You know, I think it was called “The Annoying Thing” for a reason. This simple little animation, and moreso, the sound that goes with it, originated as a harmless little Flash thing that was at the time very funny. It later morphed into The Insanity Test, and more recently into “The Annoying Thing”. Then some ringtone company buys it and grrr! It’s on the TV all the time, and on Friday, I actually heard someone with it on their phone – NO! It’s completely ruined something that was once really funny. More of a rant here.
Hmm, I’d best go and finish my homework.
Tidying up
I need to tidy my room. I’ve also thought of the 20 or so VHS tapes I’ve recorded over the past few years… I’m not going to take it away with me, it might be interesting to see what’s on them though, and perhaps digitise some of it.
Oh well, I’m tired, night all.
University offers
Yay, got unconditional offers for both of my back-up universities, Abertay and Robert Gorden. Still got St Andrews, Heriot-Watt and Napier to get replies from… I’m really hoping I’ll get into St Andrews, but I guess we’ll see what happens.
In other news, TGUSVBAHHNF,YKWIM?OAIONBHBUACWCADTWWKABOWTTHIG. Yeah.
School again
Well, the weather didn’t end up so bad today that there was no school… we were back to what vaguely resembles normal today. There are some pictures on the Orcadian web site of the flooding caused by the high winds, high tide, and so on. Quite bad in places.
Other than that, not that much going on really.
Wind!
It’s very windy today… so windy, in fact, that all schools in Orkney have been closed. ๐ Hurricane-force winds of over 100mph, possibly as high as 115mph say the Met Office, battered the place last night… it’s a wonder the hostel didn’t fall down! I remember my room shaking a bit as I tried to get to sleep, then I woke up to Matt or someone shouting that there was no school. It appears that the wind has had quite an effect nationally.
And that’s the news for today!
*sigh*
Don’t you love idiots? *sigh*
Very windy here just now… meant to be reaching force 11 tonight, over 100mph winds… should be fun! Meant to be wintry, snowy weather soon too, might all mingle into a giant blizzard. Will report back tomorrow if I survive! ๐
Fire alarms!
Grrr, not one, but TWO fire alarms last night… the first one was about 12.30am (or so I thought, some people say it was 2.30am), and another at 3.30am… suffice to say, we were rather tired on the first day back. *sigh*
Back to the hostel… again
Well, it’s that time of the holidays again: more specifically, the end of them. In a few hours, I’ll have to get on a boat for three hours, visiting such delightful places as Stronsay and Eday, to get to town, and go to the hostel, ready for school bright and early tomorrow morning at 8.45am. That’ll be fun. I’ll finish my English reading (Alisdair Gray’s “Poor Things”) on the boat, and the homework that I’ve still not quite finished I’ll finish tonight. *sigh*
Power cut!
Gah, we had a power cut over the whole of the island earlier today for a couple of hours… was rather annoying. I got quite a bit of Poor Things read though for English, although in the light of oil lamps and candles, it wasn’t always that easy. Then we managed to get a portable TV working (which normally used very weird batteries, or an AC adapter) by rigging it up to a 12 volt car battery… shortly after that, the power came back on though. Oh well, at least I got me roast dinner tonight! ๐
