The May Dip

Hundreds, maybe even thousands, of students all jumping into the North Sea at sunrise. Madness. Cold, but strangely fun. I don’t feel tired now, though…
Busy busy busy!
Well, things have been really busy since getting back to uni, with work but also mainly with the ents crew at the moment. Had a small band setup on Saturday afternoon/evening, which went fine enough. Was meant to be doing one myself this Saturday, but have got the International Cultural Evening on Sunday (and rigging for that on Saturday), so may have to pass that one up for a week or two. The ICE is the first project I’ve been coordinating (from a technical point of view) myself, it’s quite exciting, but also quite demanding. Have been attending ICE meetings over the past month or so, but this week is really the crunch week: got a lighting plan sorted over the past couple of days, sorted people out with jobs, figured out how we’re going to do everything, and starting to learn how to use the Pearl 2000 lighting console we have (I’m used to the Enigma, which is an old console we use for the bop mainly, but have never really used the Pearl). There’s a Pearl emulator available for download from the manafacturer’s web site, which is very very handy (along with the manual and tutorial – which I do quite like: “You can patch multiple dimmer channels to the top faders by holding down the AVO button, then holding the first swop button, then pressing the last button of the range to be patched. You might need to grow a third hand, or borrow someone elseโs, to accomplish this.”). Hopefully when it comes to actually getting lights doing things on Saturday and Sunday, it shouldn’t be as challenging as it perhaps was.
Also busy with STAR FM again now for 2 weeks, teching shows now and then. Having a good time, the shows so far have run perfectly from my point of view which is great.
I’m probably busy with other things to, but right now, I can’t quite think what. Busy busy, and that, so shall check back in the month of May no doubt!
Enjoy!
It is April!

Am a little bit bored so decided to steal this from Ann’s LiveJournal…
– – – – 5 YEARS AGO – – – –
How old were you?
13
Where did you go to school?
Sanday Junior High School (well, Sanday Community School as it became)
Where did you work?
I didn’t.
Another update to my map
I’ve updated my county map again, what with places I’ve visited in recent months, and places I simply forgot to add in the past. I haven’t included counties I’ve only travelled through, as in a way that’s not really visiting them… how representative is a motorway of a county? I guess the answer to that one may depend on the county!
Also, I’ve uploaded the photos of Tom’s passing out parade at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, Cornwall yesterday – click here to view them. There are a couple of movies of the military band too, which were very good. Some other photos will be uploaded later once I look through the photos on Tom’s camera. Overall it was a pretty good event – we set off at 4am to drive down from North Wales, and got there around 10am (when we weren’t allowed in the main car park until 11.30am), so had to kill some time. Then the event started properly a little while after 1.30pm, after having had spent some time in the Raleigh Bar, with a video of what they’d all been up to for the past couple of weeks. The parade started at 2.30pm, and it was generally very impressive – the military band was very good, and the boys were all rather good. Felt quite proud of Tom really, he certainly seems to have matured a lot over the past couple of months. ๐
Back in North Wales now until Thursday, when I’m heading back up to St Andrews for the second week of the holidays. Well, that’s all for now!
North Wales and passing out parade!
Got home to North Wales last night for the Easter break (which doesn’t actually cover Easter this year). Got up at 4am then to drive down with Dad to Plymouth for my brother’s Royal Navy passing out parade. It was really quite good – Tom seems to have matured an awful lot this past couple of months. Shall post more tomorrow anyway, I’m very tired. ๐
More snow!
It’s gone and snowed again! The BBC is currently predicting more snow over the next week or so, too (well, “light snow”). We had “light snow” yesterday morning – particularly so in Dundee – but today I woke up to find it white outside, people making snowmen and throwing snowballs, and all that sort of stuff. Muchos fun. ๐
I sat my driving theory test in Dundee yesterday morning, and of course, I passed. ๐ 34 out of 35 on the multiple choice, and I passed the hazard perception with a mark only a bit above the pass mark to be honest, but it was a pass anyway. So that’s all fine and good. It’ll be at least two months before I can sit my practical due to the long waiting list at Cupar, but hopefully I can get that done in May or June. Would be nice, anyway!
Time is flying and in two weeks, I shall be in North Wales again – the holidays are near. I’m not too sure where this half of the semester has gone – it only seemed to have started, and now it’s nearly gone! I’ve got a chunk of work to do over the next couple of weeks too, particularly as I’m leaving a bit early to attend my brother’s passing out parade for the Navy in Plymouth. I was quite pleased that I was able to book a “Super Advance Return” ticket to Flint – ยฃ29.70 return (with railcard), as opposed to at least ยฃ50 for a standard saver ticket. It means a bit more waiting around at stations (I have to change 3 times on the way there, although only once back, which is nice), but it’s a lot cheaper! Despite what people say, I personally don’t find the British rail network to be all that bad – at least, the routes I take seem to be alright most of the time! Can’t say I’ve ever really had a bad experience – a couple of minor delays at times, but that’s about it.
I was very tired last night as, after getting back from Dundee, I went straight to the union to help set up for King Creosote, a band who were playing in the union last night. Spent from 1pm to around 1.30am there, working hard for most of it – was fun and rewarding though, if tired. Oh, this is on the Ents Crew, by the way (entertainments crew – setting up sound and lighting, lighting in my case, for the event).
Right, I’m hungry, going to get some food, and then check the forums – not really had much time to check tt-forums this week! And then I really should do some work…
Snow!
Finally, the St Andrews microclimate has caught up with the rest of the UK! ๐
While it isn’t quite as white as that photo shows (the East Sands a bit earlier in the day), it’s still all snowy, and a few snowmen have sprouted from the ground, and there’s the crunch-crunch-crunch as you walk around the place. Yay. ๐

Yep, it’s the invasion of the minimal-content blogs. Hmm, I still have to let you all know about my holiday, don’t I?
Oh, by the way: possibly old, possibly not, but chutney. It’s addictive and memorable in the same way as Magical Trevor was. It just goes round, and round, and round, and round, and…

UTF-8 in mIRC!
Yes, after many years of waiting, mIRC finally supports UTF-8! No more shall Patchman have to complain about my lack of UTF-8ness on #tycoon. ๐
If you use IRC, particularly any channel that I’m on, I’d recommend you upgrade to mIRC 6.17 in order to not get annoyed whenever I use the pound sign or the ยฌ_ยฌ smiley. ๐

How much is your blog worth?
So now you know.
Falling sand!
I did promise to post a blog about exams and holidays and second semester and so on, this I haven’t done yet. I may do it later tonight.
Anyway, I randomly came across the falling sand game today, something which infected #tycoon a little while ago and I imagine a good chunk of the rest of the Internet. It’s really quite addictive, give it a try. ๐
A proper blog is coming soon, anyway… probably.
Exam results!
(I will post a blog about my holidays soon, once I’ve got time)
Got my exam results this morning, and generally, they’re pretty good. I’ve passed everything, anyway, which is all you need to do. I got 18.2 for Computer Science, 16.4 for Discrete Mathematics, 10.5 for Management and 13.5 for Philosophy. Exams are graded on a non-linear 20 point scale, where a 5 is all that is needed to pass. I’m quite pleased with the first two marks in particular, anyway. ๐
Now then, my Mac Mini has just arrived, so time to set it up!
An update to my map…
Well, I can update my visited countries map now I guess:
Will post more later. Just uploading my photos from Budapest. ๐
EDIT: Find the photos here – there are a lot of them!
In Budapest!
A quick hello from Hungary! Got in last night after about 11 hours on trains, in airports, and flying, but all went well. It’s all snowy here in Budapest and everything looks really beautiful. Will take many photos over this next week, I’m sure. We may also be crossing the border to Austria at the weekend for a day trip to Vienna, which would be fun! ๐ Will post more next week when I’m back.
All done!
Well, all my exams are finished now, at last. ๐ Had Management and Philosophy on Thursday, they seemed to go reasonably well, I think, so will just have to wait for the results to come out now! Off to Budapest on Monday for a week, so that should be good fun. ๐
Just a quick blog there today, I’m afraid… dinner’s nearly ready. Toodle pip.
Two down, two to go…
Well, as the post title suggests, two of my exams have been, and two are still to come. I had Computer Science on Thursday, which was really very straightforward for me – 50% of it was multiple choice! Discrete Mathematics was on Friday, and that seemed to go very well too, so so far, so good. ๐ I’ve got the more difficult ones next Thursday – Management in particular I’m not looking forward to quite so much mainly because of the large number of theorists and so on that have to be remembered. Philosophy shouldn’t be too bad, but it’s on the same day as management, which isn’t really ideal. Oh well, will let you know how things go. ๐
Other news now, and I got my new Audigy 2 ZS Platinum installed on Friday. It’s very nice indeed – 192KHz, 24-bit 7.1 sound. ๐ It does sound notably better than the onboard sound, even when just playing standard 44.1KHz 16-bit stuff. Also got an extra 1GB of RAM, for a total of 2GB now – also very nice. However, typically enough, my graphics card fan has gone and basically broken itself somehow (GeForce 6600GT 256MB PCI Express), so I’ve ordered a new Zalman cooler for it which in theory will arrive tomorrow, but I imagine it won’t actually arrive until Tuesday (do they despatch things on Sunday?). So my main PC is now out of action (the GPU was reaching temperatures of over 100ยฐC at times!) until then, as I’d rather not fry my graphics card. ๐ (I could install my old GF4 MX440, but that’d involve taking a PCI card out, as I only have 2 PCI slots on my motherboard). Bit of a pain, really. However, I’m using my laptop with two monitors now, which is quite nice… I could get used to this. ๐
Right, time for some food, methinks!
Music!

Inspired by ThorRune‘s blog, I have added my weekly top artists from Last.fm to my site, which you can find hidden in the depths of the navigation bar on the right. (It’s rather long, I know). On a related note, I do like the PHP 5 SimpleXML extension – it really is so simple to use. ๐
On another vaguely related note, I’ve noticed a lot more cross-blog commentary as such, thanks to the new Planet TT-Forums by Aegir (note that the URL has changed from that listed in my previous blogs on the subject). Keep this up, guys, it’s really nice to see. ๐
Right, enough procrastination, back to revision. My first exam is tomorrow…
Oh tell me why… do we build castles in the sky?

Ah, I like the bop. It’s much fun. Even when running it, as such.
