Blog: The Life Of A Supreme Ruler
Time ticks on…
… and it’s getting to that part of the holidays when they’re nearly over – just tomorrow, Friday, Saturday and Sunday-until-5pm now. *sigh* Then it’s 4-5 weeks until exams, and then, well, we’ll see.
Turck MMCache!
I installed Turck MMCache on Zernebok today – basically, it compiles PHP code and stores that compiled version in memory, saving CPU time next time someone asks for the script. So far, it seems to be working quite nicely, and hopefully will help keep load on Zernebok down a bit more.
I managed to get around to doing some work on the new Repository today (which, incidentally, won’t look anything like the old one I’ve just linked to). Should be good when it’s done, anyway. 😉
Linux from scratch!
A more nerdy post today… I’ve been playing around with Linux From Scratch over the past day or so – basically, building a Linux system from, well, scratch. I started doing this in Virtual PC first of all, which was a bit of a mistake because it took ages. LFS measures things in “SBU” (Static Build Unit), based upon how long it takes to compile binutils, the first main package to be built. Under Virtual PC, it took 86 minutes and 40.981 seconds to build binutils, and some 227 minutes 35.555 seconds to build glibc. When I dug out an old hard disk and installed LFS on my real hardware, binutils took 5 minutes 22.347 seconds, and glibs 31 minutes 45.561 seconds. I now have a complete temporary build environment, tomorrow I’ll tackle the final thing, and maybe even get into “Beyond Linux From Scratch”, although I’ll need to download the packages for that one, which may take some time.
Well, I’m tired, so I’ll night for now.
Saturday

And it’s Saturday, and I hear the Pope has just died. Hmm, oh well, it had to happen some day, really.
Back on Sanday, and I had lifeguarding today, which seemed to drag on for a long time, somewhat longer than usual, and very hot. It’s actually been a very nice day here, rather summer-like. Apart from that, I’ve not been doing that much, quite bored really.
April Fools!
Well, today is April Fools Day, and here’s a roundup of a few April Fools that I’ve noticed:
- The Transport Tycoon Forums: a variety of words mysteriously changed… “the” to “teh”, “with” to “whit”, “TTDPatch” to “OpenTTD”, and others… most people found it quite funny, some found it annoying, some both. 😉
- Also on tt-forums… Darkvater announces that he’s abandoning OpenTTD for Windows – some think this is possibly true, who knows? Guess we’ll see…
- TTDPatch: small easter egg in TTDPatch 2.0.1 alpha 48
- GMail are increasing account sizes to 2GB, maybe more.. mine’s currently at 1561MB (you can see them grow!)
- Age of Empires III Heaven put a video up claiming to be footage from a recent show about the game… I admit this one had me, until I started reading the forum, thought, “hmm, hang on a minute!”, played the bit of video that had already downloaded and discovered it was Magical Trevor!
- Wikipedia have apparently been bought by Encyclopaedia Brittanica… the user-edited page describing the event soon descended into quite estoric madness however!
- The Register reports that Steve Jobs has joined IKEA
That’s a few, anyway… see if you can find any more while you still can. 😉
